Networked Philanthropy
In recent years, digital platforms in China such as QQ, Alipay, and Douyin have taken innovative steps to address social and environmental challenges through user-driven initiatives. These campaigns engage users in meaningful actions that contribute to both local and global causes. The “Plant a Streetlight” Campaign, launched by QQ during the “99 Public Welfare Day” in 2023, tackled the issue of insufficient night-time lighting in rural areas. Users could convert their Qzone interactions into “light beams”. These beams were accumulated to fund the installation of solar-powered streetlights. The campaign surpassed its goal of 5 million beams, resulting in the installation of 1,261 streetlights across villages in Sichuan and Shaanxi provinces, benefiting over 11,000 villagers. Alipay’s “Ant Forest” initiative focuses on environmental sustainability. Users earn energy points for low-carbon behaviour such as walking, using public transport, and making online payments. These points can be used to virtually plant trees, which are equal to real trees planted in desert areas by environmental organizations. Since its launch, “Ant Forest” has facilitated the planting of over 2 billion trees in China’s desert regions. “Douyin Charity” addresses educational inequality in rural areas by providing free educational resources through short, engaging videos created in collaboration with educational experts and volunteers. These videos cover a wide range of subjects and are easily accessible to anyone with the app. By 2024, the initiative had reached over 1 million students, significantly improving access to quality education in underserved regions. These initiatives demonstrate how digital platforms drive social and environmental change. By engaging users in meaningful actions, these platforms have created a lasting impact on local communities while inspiring broader societal shifts.
